Embedded Software Engineering Internship – ASML

Everything seems to move so fast at ASML. And when I first realized the size of my intern project I was a little worried that I’d run out of time. But with help from my coach I mapped out several key milestones and logically planned the ways of working. Since being at ASML my time-management skills have definitely improved. It even looks like I will finish a few weeks earlier than the six months originally scheduled for my project.

Obviously, I already knew how to make lists and prioritize tasks, but these basics really take on new significance in such a dynamic organization. One of the pieces of advice I was given was to stop taking work home with me. So I tried this and it was incredible, my efficiency and focus became much better. In retrospect, I’m not surprised, because good time management should include out-of-office hours.

If ASML was a sport, what would it be?

If ASML was a sport, I’d say it would be ‘swimming’. That’s because in a swimming pool you can sink or swim yourself, but you also have coaches on the side giving you advice and encouragement every step of the way. Also, just like in swimming, you have to pace yourself – it’s not simply about going as fast as you can to win the race. You need steady, even strokes.

Advice to others?

If you want to experience different cultures in an international environment then ASML is ideal. Also, you have to be results oriented to fit in at ASML. And I know that every company says it wants results oriented people, but at ASML this also means knowing when to ask others to help you get your result.

Best memories

My colleagues and the working environment. I will always remember how everyone has encouraged me in my work as well as their great sense of humor, which helps create a lively environment. Before I started at ASML I thought perhaps that it would have a serious formal atmosphere where everybody was focused only on their own work. Fortunately the truth is entirely different. It’s great!
