Ready to make a good start, I went to our main office in The Hague on Monday. Overly eager and excited to start, of course I was the first one in an empty office. This gave me some time to explore and pick a nice desk before meeting my colleagues.
The office is big, clean and very well equipped. There are meeting rooms in many forms, for all purposes you could imagine. From more of a casual coffee room to a small lecture room, and everything in between. The desks are adjustable in height and you can easily connect your laptop and start working. After reading and answering some e-mails and doing onboarding assignments, it was time to meet the team.
I had a little tour and a coffee with my manager. She is very friendly and after a casual introduction, she explained how my first few weeks will look. I will have information meetings with all the team members, so I get to meet them and learn from them.
During the first week, I have met nearly all of my team members and learned a lot from all of them about the company and the work our team does. For my first rotation, I am joining the Chief Actuary Office. I will learn all about reporting and join initiatives that will make the reporting run even more smoothly.
As a trainee, I am part of a group of peers. Also, I am assigned a buddy from last year’s trainee group. I am fortunate to have a buddy who has worked in the team I am joining now. She had some useful tips for me. We met virtually on Friday, and plan to keep having meetings from time to time.
It is great to have people around you that are in a similar situation. When thrown in the deep, the trainee group really helps in keeping a positive mindset. We have lunch or a coffee together, where we can vent about any struggles we come across and help each other out with practical stuff. On top of that, we also have biweekly informal meetings.
Working from home
In these special times, working from home has become the norm rather than an exception. In fact, most colleagues went to office this week for the first time in a long time. It is rather nice to have a combination of office days and working from home days. The commute time saved allows for more rest time and my home colleagues (partner and cats) are great company.
In my first week, I have already learned loads, and also got an insight into how much there is still to learn. The offices are well-equipped and nice to be at. My colleagues are super friendly and real experts in their field. Because of all this, I am confident that I made the right decision in joining NN-group and I can’t wait to find out what the following years will bring!
