Jobke, Associate Consultant Bain & Company: At Bain, the combination of both learning and sharing is key to success; every case you get is different from either an industry or functional point of view.
I am a person that is very eager to learn. Next to that, I get great satisfaction from sharing my experience and ideas with especially younger people that still have to make the choices in life that I have already made (choice of studies, job etc.).
At Bain, the combination of both learning and sharing is key to success; every case you get is different from either an industry or functional point of view. At the same time there are always more experienced consultants who have shifted types of cases many times before and teach you how to deal with this. As a result, you learn every day.
Outside your case experience, Bain makes sure you keep on learning. On day one, you get assigned a buddy (often someone a year ahead of you) who shows you how to get around in your first months.
Trainings are organised throughout the year together with either your peers or the entire office, to add to the hands-on learning you get during cases. Next to that, either a manager or partner becomes your advisor who, together with you, makes sure your learning curve does not flatten.
Outside work, my great passion is football (soccer) which I played at the highest youth level about 10 years ago. At the moment, I still play with a student team in Utrecht. Not surprisingly, my favorite Bain event is the "Bain World Cup", where Bain offices from all over the world compete in a two-day football tournament to become the best Bain football team in the world. We have just returned from Chicago, where the tournament was held this year, but unfortunately (just like the Dutch national team), we could not bring home the cup. Let's hope for next year!
My favorite case
I just finished my first case, which has been a great experience. I got to know the basics of all the different skills required on a case and I was amazed by the amount of responsibility I received. The fact that parts of the final presentation came from my hands directly gave me a real kick! Also, the client we worked for happened to be in the news all the time, which added an extra bit of excitement to the work we were doing.
