Laurens-Jan, Manager Bain & Company: At Bain, personal development of each individual really is central. During projects, Bainees continuously and openly discuss their personal development.

My passion

At Bain, personal development of each individual really is central. During projects, Bainees continuously and openly discuss their personal development. At the beginning of your Bain career you choose a mentor with whom you proactively discuss and plan your professional development. Do you want to work on a specific case or in a specific country? Do you want to go for a particular MBA or even for an 'externship' at another company? Bain is willing to put in place whatever drives your potential, as long as you want them to. The best part of this passion for personal development is that it is reflected in Bain's employees: they are all fun, intelligent and interesting people to be with.

My favorite case

One of my very first projects was for a large global chemical corporate. My role was to advise one of the business units of the company in what chemical to invest and where the factory should be located to produce this chemical. In two months time I had weekly meetings with each of the business managers of each continent to present the findings of my market analysis and discuss the way forward. Looking back, these meetings were just as challenging as exciting. Maybe best memory is reading in the newspaper that the client has decided to build a factory in China and that it has strengthened it's market share.

A final thought

I think that for all people at the beginning of their career, it is critical to gain the broadest range of experience in their first job: there is simply so much to learn. Being with Bain for a while know, I am positive that there is no place that better facilitates this goal. I think that people learn mostly from doing different things at different times instead of doing the same things over and over again. In my first year only, I worked on a large variety of challenges with various companies in various businesses. At the time I joined Bain, I never expected that I would develop my analytical, communication and management skills as much as I have done in that first year.
