“The work climate is very pleasant and you are challenged and encouraged to develop yourself.”

Hi there!

My name is Julia Heinsius, I am 24 years old and I live in Amsterdam. I studied in Utrecht and completed my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology at the University of Utrecht. Then, in the summer of 2020, I completed the Master in Communication Science (Media Psychology track) at the VU University Amsterdam.

In which department are you working during your internship?

I am an intern in the Brand Communication team and together with my internship supervisor I am responsible for the Visual Identity of Albert Heijn. The great thing about this is that I am involved in many different kind of projects touching the Albert Heijn brand. This makes the internship very diverse, interesting and, above all, very instructive, because through the many projects I got to know the company, its processes and departments, very well.

An example of a project I worked on is a PowerPoint slide deck, which enables all employees of Albert Heijn, Etos and Gall & Gall to rapidly create a professional PowerPoint presentation with far less effort and time. Within this project, we worked together with an external organization and I discovered that there can be quite a few obstacles within a project, which can sometimes delay the expected lead time. For example, we were on the verge of rolling the slidedeck out to the entire organization when the legal department informed us that something was not correct. That required some problem-solving skills which is something that really motivates me: immediately looking for a solution and think creatively how to achieve it.

I learned a lot during my internship. For example, I think it was very valuable that I learned how to function as a ‘small player’ in a huge company like Ahold Delhaize and this professional environment. I have gained project experience from start to finish. I particularly learned a lot by asking questions to colleagues and observing the way they work.  I was eager to learn and was encouraged by colleagues with many years of experience within Ahold Delhaize, who always took time to help me.

Why did you choose Ahold Delhaize?

This is one of the reasons I wanted to become an intern at Ahold Delhaize: the work climate is very pleasant and you are challenged and encouraged to develop yourself. Through the various projects, I experienced the progressive spirit of the company and noticed that you can really make an impact on the development of Ahold Delhaize. Despite the fact that I had to work at home a lot because of the Corona crisis, I learned a lot and I am very grateful for the personal and professional growth I gained. Big thank you to all the supportive colleagues and especially Lenny Karhof and Fleur van ’t Wout!
