Name: Jonne van Welij

Track: General Management

Studied: Strategic Management

Trainee year: 2019

I graduated from my master Strategic Management at the beginning of 2019. Up to that point my choices concerning my studies were pretty straight forward. However, after graduating I was not sure in which direction I wanted to head. All I knew is that I wanted to continue developing myself professionally and also personally. My motto is “if you don’t move forward, then what are you really doing with your life?”

After graduating I came into contact with a variety of companies. As I explored I came to the conclusion that a traineeship would fit my career ambitions. It is the perfect opportunity to get to know a company and its different departments, while also giving your personal development a great deal of attention. The NN traineeship was most appealing to me due to the company culture and the setup of the traineeship (2 years, 3 rotations, many off-site training days, immediate exposure to senior management, etc.).

I believe the best work is delivered when a team of motivated people work together and bring out the best in other. But of course, there has to be someone to keep the overview and steer the team in the right direction. I found this leadership role exciting, which is why I looked into the GM traineeship. “Develop yourself to become a future leader”, who wouldn’t want this I thought?

From what I have heard and experienced, becoming a leader is not a simple task. There are many challenges along the way, which is why this traineeship is so valuable to me. Learning how to communicate the right message to your team, how to inspire them to be the best version of themselves, and how to make them all committed to work towards a common goal. That is what I want to learn, and I feel like I am in the right place for that. The GM traineeship gives me plenty of opportunities to step outside of my comfort zone and to develop myself in different areas. As an example, in our first week we had a pitch workshop, in which we had to present ourselves to the trainee group and talk about who we are and what we stand for. Overall, the GM traineeship is very diverse and challenges me to make the most out of it.
